New safeguarding resource launched in partnership with youth work charity Youthscape.

10 December 2018, Thirtyone:eight

Thirtyone:eight has launched a brand new safeguarding resource for youthworkers which has been developed in partnership with the youth work charity Youthscape.  Safe? is a new scenario-based resource for anyone working with teenagers, whether that’s professionally or in a voluntary role. It’s designed to help workers refresh their skills on recognising signs of various types of abuse or safeguarding risk.

Launched at the National Youth Ministry Weekend 2018 in November, this accessible game-style resource enables youth work teams to work together to explore a broad range of youth work scenarios, and consider how and when an intervention might be necessary. Players take turns to draw cards, gradually building up a picture of concerning (and mitigating) factors in am imagined young person’s life. As the scenario increases in detail and complexity, they must decide when, and how to intervene.

Martin Saunders, Deputy Chief Executive of Youthscape said "At Youthscape we take safeguarding really seriously, and our partnership with thirtyone:eight has allowed us to translate our passion for good safeguarding into a national resource for anyone working with teenagers.   This simple-to-understand resource doesn’t replace safeguarding training of course, but it does act as a fantastic supplement and refresher, which ensures youth work teams are enabled to think through the kinds of possible safeguarding scenarios which might play out in real life."

"Thirtyone:eight and Youthscape collaborated closely on the resource, which was developed throughout 2018.  Thanks to thirtyone:eight’s unparalleled knowledge and wisdom on church-based safeguarding, and Youthscape’s track record of equipping youth workers with creative resources, the result is a very practical tool which can be immediately applied to raise safeguarding standards in any church and a range of other contexts. We’re delighted with the results, and look forward to seeing Safe? in use across the UK and beyond."

Justin Humphreys, joint CEO at Thirtyone:eight said "It has been a huge privilege to work with such a respected and forward thinking organisation such as Youthscape on developing and launching this innovative and useful resource.  At thirtyone:eight our vision is to equip society with the knowledge and skills to create safer environments for children and adults at risk and to empower society to respond appropriately to those who are vulnerable or have experienced abuse.  The opportunity to partner with Youthscape on this resource is a significant and practical response to that vision, and we are extremely grateful to all the youthscape team in helping us make this a reality."

"Youthworkers can often find themselves at the forefront of very challenging and complex situations involving young people, so helping to ensure they feel confident in their response to safeguarding concerns is crucial.  It's our hope that in using the resource teams will feel equipped and supported in their vital role."

Safe? which is priced at £20 and can be purchased through both organisations is available from our online shop under the resources tab.
