In December 2019, thirtyone:eight was commissioned by Emmanuel Church Wimbledon to undertake an independent Lessons Learned Review of the church, focusing on one of its past incumbents, Jonathan Fletcher. The commissioning of this review followed a number of safeguarding allegations being made regarding the conduct of Jonathan Fletcher.
Due to non-disclosure-related information emerging late within the scope of the review, the publication of the Lessons Learned Review report is being postponed. At this stage, we are only able to confirm that the publication of the report will now not happen before January 2021.
The review commenced in January 2020 and throughout the period of the COVID-19 lockdown has continued to make progress. This has been an important and necessarily detailed process that has included a large number of interviews and the review of a significant amount of information.
Publication of the report was due at the end of September 2020. However, in recent weeks, it has become clearer that the original timescale set for the review is no longer achievable. This is due to the need to take additional time to explore the information that has emerged late in the lessons learned process. This is necessary in order to fully address the scope as agreed with Emmanuel Church.
We understand that this will be frustrating to those who have been awaiting the publication of the report. However, we believe it will lead to a stronger, more robust understanding of the issues that the review seeks to learn from.
In acknowledging the potential impact of this delay, we have informed all participants in advance of this public statement. We will be working hard to reduce delay beyond this point and further communications will follow regarding the revised publication date.
We sincerely apologise for any distress this disappointing, but necessary postponement may cause, particularly for those who have so courageously participated in this review.
