Governance
Governance refers to the practices, processes and systems used to run an organisation. It includes things like oversight and accountability structures, policies and procedures and plans for managing risk. Good governance helps an organisation prevent abuse and means it can respond quickly and with integrity when concerns arise. Central to this, is the Governance Board or Board of Trustees.
The governance board or Board of Trustees is appointed to have independent authority and legal responsibility for how an organisation or charity is managed in line with the guidance and expectations of the regulator. They have a vital role in decision making and compliance as well as setting the values, standards and behaviours of the organisation.
Organisations must set clear governance standards to meet their goals without causing harm - especially faith-based groups offering spiritual and charitable support. For charities or congregations within larger bodies or partnerships, it's vital to define who holds governance responsibilities. Overlapping layers can lead to missed safeguarding steps if roles are unclear. A Memorandum of Understanding can help clarify accountability and prevent such risks.
