Step 6. Checks
The sixth step in the safer recruitment process is to carry out the necessary checks to ensure the person you wish to appoint is safe and legally able to fulfil the role.
Checks are made as part of a ‘conditional offer’. This means that the organisation wants to offer the person the role on the condition that the checks are completed.
The candidate should not start the role until all relevant checks have been done. Checks should be carried out whether a role is paid or voluntary.
Checks could include:
- A relevant criminal record check or appropriate PVG Scheme membership (where this applies).
- Consideration of the Self-declaration form (where this applies).
- Satisfactory references being received.
- Other legal checks e.g. Right to Work.
- Relevant qualifications / registrations.
- Relevant licences and paperwork e.g. driving licence and insurance for delivery / transportation roles.
Once the checks are back and satisfactory, the person can be given a copy of their contract or volunteer agreement and a start date can be agreed.
