Communicating your policy

Communicating your safeguarding policy and message is one important way you can raise awareness of safeguarding within your organisation and make sure everybody knows and understands what is expected.

Ways to communicate your policy:

  • Put up posters in key places around your premises both in public and administrative spaces.
  • Have a statement on your website along with contact details about how to get a copy of the policy.
  • Distribute your policy to all workers, including volunteers, as part of their induction and whenever updates are made.
  • Having separate documents for policy and procedures can make the policy easier to read and help ensure that people can understand its key topics.
  • Hold training with your trustees and leadership to go through the policy content so they understand it.
  • Make a statement of your organisations commitment to safeguarding.
  • Use a notice or announcement in community meetings (e.g. on Safeguarding Sunday, at your AGM or when the policy is updated) to highlight the policy and tell people where they can obtain a copy.
  • Provide a link to the policy in community newsletters or emails.

Things to consider

  • Is your policy accessible to everyone in your community?
  • Do you need an Easy Read or visual version of your policy?
  • Do you provide your policy in translation?
  • Is there anyone in your community who isn’t being reached by the way your policy is currently communicated? What would need to happen to change this?
